The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmen, celebrated on July 16, is one of the most beloved and widespread devotions, known especially for being the protector of sailors and the "star" that guides the faithful in times of trouble.
Who was Our Lady of Mount Carmen?
Her name comes from Mount Carmel (Israel). According to tradition, on July 16, 1251, the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Simon Stock, superior of the Carmelite Order, giving him the Scapular, a promise of special protection and salvation for those who wear it with devotion.
She is known as Stella Maris (Star of the Sea), because just as ancient navigators trusted the stars to reach safe harbor, devotees trust in Mary to guide them through the waters of life.
