The feast of Our Lady of the Pillar, celebrated every October 12th, is one of the oldest and most significant Marian devotions in the Christian world. It represents the strength of faith and the constant protection of her devotees. According to tradition, it is not an apparition after her Assumption, but a "coming" in mortal form. In 40 AD, the Virgin Mary appeared to the Apostle James the Greater on the banks of the Ebro River in Zaragoza, Spain, to encourage him in his evangelizing mission.
As a testament to her presence, she left a jasper column (the "Pillar"), upon which the first temple dedicated to Mary in Christendom was built.
