...The montera is the traditional hat of the bullfighters. Used since the nineteenth century, replacing the cocked hat of sheriffs and other officials authorized to execute death. It was introduced in 1835 by the bullfighter Francisco Montes, "Paquiro" who made several modifications to the costume. The montera is usually made of astrakhan with a taffetan lining.
