In the past, matadors grew their own natural pigtail (coleta). Over time, this custom evolved into wearing this symbolic synthetic hairpiece. The tradition remains highly symbolic, leading to the Spanish expression "cortarse la coleta" (cutting the pigtail) to signify a bullfighter's definitive retirement from the ring.
